Signature D-Trust Card UPC – Secure Signing and Authentication for the Unified Patent Court

Application for patent agents

The D-Trust Card UPC signature gives patent agents efficient access to the Unified Patent Court. They can complete their patent-related tasks with just one card and benefit from legally secure qualified electronic signatures.

The Signature Card for the Unified Patent Court (UPC)

The EU’s Unified Patent Court (UPC) has been active since the beginning of 2023. A key component of the UPC is the Case Management System (UPC CMS), where patent agents must register and log in. The D-Trust Card UPC signature ensures secure login and authentication in the UPC CMS.

Your Benefits at a Glance

  • Efficient – legally secure signing and UPC registration combined in one card
  • Legally effective – the qualified signature fulfils the written form requirement
  • EU-compliant – certified according to eIDAS for maximum data security

Product Details

In addition to the qualified electronic signature, the D-Trust Card UPC signature enables reliable logging in to the UPC CMS. Unlike the classic signature cards from D-Trust, the D-Trust Card UPC signature contains an advanced certificate based on a qualified certification authority (CA) in the EU Trusted List. This ensures the necessary qualified authentication for the UPC CMS. It is not possible to use a classic D-Trust signature card for the UPC CMS. If you do not need to log in to the UPC CMS, then use the classic D-Trust Signature Card or the Profession D-Trust Card with the professional attribute added to the certificate.

Using the D-Trust Card UPC Signature

The D-Trust Card UPC signature is absolutely essential for using the UPC CMS. In addition, it can also be used for:

  • Property rights registration with the German Patent and Trademark Office (DPMA)
  • Electronic legal transactions with the Federal Patent Court

Technical Data

The D-Trust Card UPC signature always contains two certificates: an advanced authentication certificate, which is required to use the UPC CMS and is based on a qualified certification authority (CA), and a qualified signature certificate. Optionally, the name of an organization can be entered in the certificate, but it is not possible to include an individual professional attribute.

The D-Trust Card UPC signature is offered as a single signature card based on RSA keys. A PIN must be entered on the card reader for each qualified electronic signature.

  • The PIN and PUK are delivered separately with a PIN letter.
  • The D-Trust Card Assistant software for card initialisation and changing the PIN is provided free of charge.
  • If needed, you can obtain a chip card reader from the REINER SCT shop.
  • Middleware is mandatory for using the UPC CMS. Cryptovision SCinterface or Nexus Personal are supported for RSA-based cards.
  • The signature software of a range of providers is supported.
  • Please see our information on supported readers and partner software.

Frequently Asked Questions

No, it is not technically possible to use a conventional D-Trust signature card for the UPC, as the D-Trust Card UPC signature contains an advanced authentication certificate based on a qualified CA, which can be automatically verified via the EU Trusted List. This is a mandatory requirement of the Unified Patent Court.

No, a professional attribute is not required for using the UPC CMS. By default, D-Trust delivers the D-Trust Card UPC signature without a professional designation. This means that employees in a patent law firm can also use the card to access the UPC CMS.
